I was eating yummy avalakki bath for breakfast when my father called me to come to the roof with my camera. I ran up thinking that a Shikra has caught an unfortunate pigeon or a bat in it’s traps and is busy devouring it. Insted, he asked me to look up at the sky. Around the sun, a huge rainbow ring had formed. I had taken my 200-500mm lens and with that, I would have probably burnt my eye off if I tried turning it towards the hot summer mid day sun. Instead, took a few photos with my mobile instead. They too turned out to be pretty good and did a fine job of capturing even a plane passing in the sun rainbow 🙂
Apparently, this phenomenon is called a Sun Halo and appears due to some ice crystal build up in the atmosphere, scattering the sun light and forming a ring. I heard that this had been around since 9:45AM or so, we saw it at around 11AM. Came back down and went up again with the 11-16mm wide angle lens to get better and wider photos and this did a fine job of capturing the ring and the sun. Here are some pictures:
Also, I set the camera up to take a series of images to create a time lapse video too. Got about 1018 images, separated by 10 seconds each. Have been out of touch with creating time lapse videos in Photoshop. I could not get it to reduce the video duration (it was ending up with a whopping 30 mins of final run time). Instead switched over to the much easier to operate Video Editor that comes with Windows 10. Was able to add all the images, add a title frame and also add a background music (provided in the editor itself) and render the video. With a total of 1018 frames switching over each 0.03 seconds plus a five second intro frame, the video came up to around 38 seconds, which is perfect 🙂

It was a nice surprise to get to see this. Though the Bangalore weather played a spoil sport and brought in a lot of clouds to block out the halo, was still able to make a good time lapse video out of it. So not too many complaints from my end. 🙂
